The Naked Now

“The third eye is the ability to progress from seeing to explaining to tasting … [The third eye] remains in awe before an underlying mystery, coherence, and spaciousness that connects us with everything else.”

Richard Rohr’s thesis of the importance of non-dualistic seeing is repeated so often in this book that it soon becomes a familiar mantra. But that repetition serves a purpose, since non-dualistic seeing is so foreign to the large majority of us.

The Naked Now may be Richard Rohr’s most sophisticated and thorough articulation of an accessible form of contemporary mysticism. While his remarks and insights are grounded in a particular wisdom tradition, his message is relevant to all. Perhaps the most important insight is that seeing the world in broader, non-binary categories requires regular engagement with some fundamental practices, like mindfulness meditation. The practices in the appendices offer a variety of ways that anyone can use to tap more deeply into this new way of seeing the world.
